How does digital and physical typography influence each other?
The congruence of programming and typography is an exciting area for Communication Designers. The evolution of the web allows for greater typographic control than ever before, and general awareness of typography has increased as a result of the rise of desktop publishing and the personal computer.
What might this mean for communicators? What does this mean for typographers? These thoughts led to the development of '<PRINTISDEAD,LONGLIVEPRINT/>', created for the 2009 ISTD Student awards.
The initial experiments with using html and ascii to create letterforms led to the development of a phrase showcasing the issue, each letter of which is illustrated using a different communication platform either physical or digital. To take the letterforms from the digital world into the physical, a large format poster was created and installed in the CBD of Melbourne, Australia.
The project was documented in a book format that references the subject area. The aesthetic of dot matrix printer paper was adapted to reflect the subject area and provide a unique and innovative publication option outlining the project overall.
The project was successful in the ISTD award assessment, with thanks to Becky Chilcott and Anette O'Sullivan for feedback and creative direction.
Special thanks to Jess and Albert.
